Well, love, we've made it through another month. In terms of time spent together, it was pretty lousy… but I guess that's unsurprising this time of year. And it was really nice seeing you at the Christmas tree lot. I woulda frozen my butt off alongside you all morning if I could have, but alas… but, you continued your trend of giving me at least a playful whack nearly every time we see each other now, and you know I'm here for that. Well… I'm sure we'll figure something out. We seem to stall from time to time, but the trend line has been pointing in only one direction for some time now…
Anyhow. It's time for my top hits post! I realized last month that this is basically always just the first five tracks on my jogging playlist, lol. I tried mixing it up a bit by turning on shuffle buuut it's still pretty much the same. So, I dunno. Maybe I'll come up with something new in 2024… But for now, here goes:
- Your Song — Elton John — Perennial classic. And yes, my love, I am cheesy. But I think you know that by now.
- You Make Loving Fun — Fleetwood Mac — I had nearly forgotten about this one until the tribute concert early last month. Gosh… that was disappointing, wasn't it? The venue was… intimate. If that had somehow worked out, and if we had somehow wound up sitting next to each other, we would have had some parts of ourselves — hips, definitely, maybe arms, shoulders — touching for the entire concert, there would have been no avoiding it. Ah, well… Next time. Anyways, they gave little tidbits about each song, and what they said about this one is that Christine McVie wrote the song about her then affair partner. To avoid fights, she told her husband / bandmate that she had written the song about her dog. Classic. Complete side note, I realized a few months ago that I call my dog all the various pet names that I want to call you, except I stick “little” in front of them… My little love… My little heart… etc. Anyhow…
- Add It Up — Violent Femmes — This one makes a comeback! I wasn't writing to you yet, but this was a big one back in the early days… I mean, I was just listening to these guys a lot back then, having recently rediscovered them. But this song is almost exactly the right length for the car trip to the closest major chain grocery store to us. Don't ask how I know, lol.
- Hungry Like the Wolf — Reel Big Fish — Of course Duran Duran's original is king, but I've had a soft spot for this version of the song for a couple of decades now. Just the right amount of silliness. Is it as good as the original? Nah. But it's waaaay more fun.
- Challengers — The New Pornographers — I remember the video for this one from when it came out. I didn't get the song back then, like, at all. I'm still not 100% sure I get it now, lol, but still… These days, it hits me, hard.
I guess it's also time for Spotify's year unwrapped… I won't be sharing my top songs of 2023 on Facebook again this year… My 2022 one was already risky enough, but somehow I've leaned even more heavily into songs about love and longing this year. Who knew that was even possible? Lol. Plus some folks might get a bit curious about why Coldplay's Green Eyes is on there… Well… Here's the summary:

That's a lot of minutes! It said I was one of their top 10% of listeners worldwide, so… that's… like… a thing, I guess.
Oh, and that reminds me… The Regrettes are breaking up! Boooooo. Now I really regret (cough sorry) not going to see them this summer… ah well.
Eh, what the heck. I don't even remember why I made a 77rpm Spotify account… but I did. So, here, I copied my 2023 top songs playlist to it… just in case you were ever wondering just how much of a cheeseball I am, lol:
I hope you have a most wonderful day, my love… even if it is cold and rainy. And a most beautiful weekend, suitable for the most beautiful of human beings…
Yours,
